Seed Phrase / Recovery Phrase

Your seed phrase (also known as a recovery phrase) is the master key to your digital assets. It’s a critically important string of random words, containing typically 12, 15, 18, or 24 words in length. The seed phrase is generated by your crypto hardware wallet.

Why is it critical?

  • Access: Your seed phrase grants complete access to all the cryptocurrencies stored on your cold wallet.
  • Recovery: If you lose or damage your hardware wallet or if you need to access your crypto portfolio from another device, it’s the seed phrase that allows you to recover your funds.

Like a bank vault with two keys:

  • Hardware wallet: This is your storage device, similar to the physical key for your bank vault.
  • Seed phrase: This is the secret code that unlocks your crypto holdings, just like a safety deposit box key.

Remember:

  • Keep it secret and keep it safe: Don’t share your seed phrase with anyone.
  • As a crypto holder, it is your most confidential password.
  • Write it down and lock it away: Store your seed phrase on a piece of paper in a secure location, separate from your hardware wallet. Consider fireproof or waterproof storage options as well.
  • Never store it digitally or online: Avoid storing your seed phrase on your computer, phone, or cloud storage. These places are vulnerable to hacking or phishing.
  • It’s a good idea to test your seed phrase recovery process in advance. Try to recover your wallet on a second device to confirm it works as intended.

Losing your seed phrase can result in the loss of access to your cryptocurrency forever.
